13 Organizations Supporting LGBTQ+ Communities in British Columbia

In honour of Pride Month 2020, we’re highlighting organizations across Canada that support the LGBTQ+ community. For this post, we have listed organizations that are centred in BC or have local chapters there. You can draw upon these orgs if and when you need their services; alternatively, if you have the means, you can support the amazing work that they do.

1. Qmunity (Vancouver, BC)

Qmunity provides services, leadership, and safe space to improve the lives of queer, trans, and Two-Spirit individuals including counselling, events, resources, and referrals.

2. Rainbow Refugee (Vancouver, BC)

Rainbow Refugee is a community group that supports people seeking refugee protection in Canada because of persecution based on sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression (SOGIE), or HIV status. Claims can be made from outside or within Canada.

Qchat is a peer support helpline and resource database for LGBTQ2S youth across the British Columbia.

4. What’s On Queer BC (Lower Mainland, BC)

What’s On Queer BC is a magazine, calendar, and rainbow store focused on connecting the LGBTQ+ community in BC.

5. Health Initiative for Men (Lower Mainland, BC)

Health Initiative for Men is a non-profit aiming to strengthen the health and well-being of gay men. They offer health testing, counselling, sexual health education, and social and volunteer opportunities.

6. Vancouver Island Queer Resource Collective (Vancouver and Victoria, BC)

The Vancouver Island Queer Resource Collective is a collective of resources by and for the queer community on Vancouver Island; includes Queer-Owned and -Allied businesses, crisis resources, support groups, and other local resources and meetings.

7. Victoria Pink Pages (Victoria, BC)

Victoria Pink Pages is a community listing of organizations that are openly safe and welcoming, and allows the LGBTQ community to find products and services that meet their needs and interests, as well as support businesses and organizations owned or run by LGBTQ folks.

8. Victoria Pride Society (Victoria, BC)

The Victoria Pride Society runs Pride events such as the Victoria Pride Parade and Festival. They also run other youth initiatives and events.

9. Fraser Valley Youth Society (Abbotsford, Mission, and Chilliwack, BC)

The Fraser Valley Youth Society supports LGBTQ2S+ and Allied youth in the Fraser Valley by connecting them to their peers and their communities and providing supportive & inclusive help when needed.

Trans Care BC aims to improve gender-affirming care across BC by supporting the delivery of equitable and accessible care, surgical planning, and peer and community support for trans people across the province.

Pflag offers peer-to-peer support for all Canadians struggling with issues around sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. They also offer support for their families.
