6 Bottle Shops in Calgary to Support After Dry January

Reading Time: 4 minutes

You did it! You beat the odds and survived another dry January (or February!). If this is your first time, take a bow. We know it wasn’t easy but trust us when we say it’s totally worth it. It’s hard to keep any new year’s resolution, let alone this one. But here you are, still standing, so you deserve all the credit.

You know what they say, though? Everything in moderation, including moderation. After going dry for an entire month by not consuming any alcohol (leftover rum cake doesn’t count), you’re allowed to have a glass of wine or beer to yourself. While it goes without saying that you should always be drinking responsibly, we trust that a month of will power will carry over.

6 Bottle shops in Calgary to order pickup or delivery

If and when you do feel the urge for a casual beverage, why not keep it local? Calgary has enough independent breweries and other bottle shops to give you variety. And the care that these breweries put into the process to get the absolute best quality is astounding. Plus, buying local means you’ll be supporting a small business from the community that’s working hard day in and day out to provide you with worthwhile beverages. Now that business needs you to step up and help them through these tough times. That’s what you call a win, win.

Without further adieu, check out these local bottle shops in Calgary.

1. Last Best Brewing

Location: 607 11 Avenue SW

Store hours: Daily from 4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. (curbside and delivery)

Though they only opened their doors in 2015, Last Best Brewing takes its name from a historical time in Canada that dates back to the migration to the western prairies. That was well over 100 years ago, but today, Last Best exists to uphold the traditions of great craft beer in Alberta. They’re not serving food for the time being, but you can still pick up or have your order delivered.

2. Cold Garden Brewing

Location: 1100 11 Street SE

Store hours: Daily from 11:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Cold Garden brews a good balance of traditional beers with what they term as more “eccentric” flavours. As part of the Inglewood community, owners Kris, Blake and Dan are always producing top quality beer for their patrons. Both pickup and delivery are currently available.

3.  Railyard Brewing

Location: 10301 19 Street NE, Calgary

Store hours: Delivery Tuesday – Saturday from 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. (Minimum $50 for delivery)

Taste is at the heart of the brewing process for Railyard, but they also hope to bring a more artistic approach to the industry. A lot of thought goes into the design of their products, and although Railyard just got started in 2017, they’ve managed to accumulate a loyal following. Curbside pickups are available with no minimum requirements.

4. Banded Peak Brewing

Location: 119-519 34 Avenue SE, Calgary

Store hours: Delivery only – same day if you order before 1:00 p.m. and next day if you order after 1:00 p.m.

Banded Peak Brewing is all about adventure. They have a selection of seasonal beers that are made to fit dynamic Calgary weather. Their brews are sold at dozens of locations across Calgary. When it’s safe to be social again, ask for a Banded Peak special and see what the waiter brings you.

5. Prairie Dog Brewing

Location: 105d 58 Avenue SE, Calgary

Store hours: 11:00 a.m. – 10:30 p.m.

Prairie Dog is one of those breweries that seem just as excited about its food as they are about the beer. If you’re into bbq, then this is the right place to be. They also take pride in being completely independent, family-owned, and do not accept tips and instead pay their employees a living wage.

6. Marda Loop Brewing

Location: 3523-18th Street SW, Calgary

Store hours: Monday – Thursday 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Saturday and Saturday 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Friday 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Marda Loop began similar to a tech startup: in the basement of its founder, Mike de Jonge. Mike has since expanded that vision to include a social space for bringing his community together, the community of Calgary, which he loves very much.

Stay safe and have your drinks delivered

As hard as it is not to be social while enjoying a drink, let’s do ourselves a favour and stay inside. We know that all of the places we mentioned have great atmospheres, but right now, it’s all about staying safe. So after getting through dry January, hop on Zoom and invite your friends. Virtually tap glasses and celebrate a month of serious will power.

If you do find yourself on public transit for some reason, remember there are ways to ride safely. Use Rocketman’s Transit Crowdedness feature to help you determine how crowded the next bus will be so you can decide how comfortable you are riding. You should only be commuting if it’s necessary, but we want to make sure you’re safe when it is.
