However, staying up-to-date on the road does mean that your smartphone needs to have a Wi-Fi connection or data plan to utilize all of the features.

Unfortunately, you have to pay to use Thunder Bay Transit (wouldn’t it be nice though…) which means figuring out the fare system. But paying for transit is a breeze, you can do it with exact cash as you board, or you can do it in advance by purchasing a pack of tickets or a pass.

You can use exact cash to pay for your transit service when you board one of the buses. However, you are required to use the exact amount as operators are not able to provide change. Ticket books do not expire and are sold at a discounted price. You can also purchase monthly passes.

You are required to purchase a ticket before you board a transit vehicle, proof of purchase or POP is proof that you paid. It can be in the form of a pass, ticket, cash payment, or transfer.

Transfers

Your fare is valid for 60 minutes from your original purchase time. You can obtain one from the operator as you board the bus, and show it to the operator of the next vehicle. You do not need a transfer if you are using a monthly pass.

Other passes

In addition to cash fare and tickets, Thunder Bay Transit has monthly passes. Most riders obtain a regular adult pass, but there are discounts for youth and senior riders. If you have a Transit Accessibility ID card or a Lift+ ID card, you can purchase a discounted monthly pass.

On Sundays and holidays, a single adult monthly pass can be used by a single individual or:

  • Two adults/seniors and three youth, or
  • One adult/senior and four youth

A face covering or non-medical mask is mandatory for all public transit users and staff. Thunder Bay Transit also asks riders to observe physical distancing measures and routinely practice safe hand hygiene. They have implemented enhanced cleaning measures to help curb the spread of the virus. But customer service representatives remain available during regular hours and can be contacted by phone or email.

During this time, modifications have been made for various routes, which means that bus frequency and availability has temporarily changed. Thunder Bay Transit takes passenger and operator safety seriously. If you are riding public transit and feel unsafe, talk to your drive. For passengers riding after dark, the Night Stop program is in place. If there is a place other than a regular stop where you would feel more comfortable getting off, alert your driver well in advance —if it is safe to do so, they can allow you off the bus.
